Unplanned Pregnancy? 4 Options Besides Abortion

You can’t believe it.

You stare at the pregnancy test results. Maybe you didn’t do the test right. Maybe you’re misreading it.

You take it again, only to find the same result. You’re pregnant. It’s a surprise. It’s unplanned.

It’s frightening.

An unplanned pregnancy is stressful and can create anxiety. An abortion may be the first thing on your mind. However, there are many abortion alternatives for an unwanted pregnancy. These options offer hope, relief, and even joy.

4 Abortion Alternatives for an Unplanned Pregnancy

We’ll look at some of the unplanned pregnancy options besides abortion you can consider.

Option #1: Have the Baby and Become a Parent

Many of our clients don’t believe they have what it takes to be a mother. We’ve found that’s not true. Through our supportive network, we provide tools and resources for both expectant mothers and fathers. You’d be surprised to learn how many free parenting resources are out there.

Just because you have your baby doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams. Rather, it means you have someone with whom you can share your dreams. Mothers who have come through our doors have gone on to complete their education and have successful careers.

Option #2: Have an Open Adoption

There are different types of adoptions (and we’ll look at each one of them in this article). Each type of adoption are good abortion alternatives.

During an open adoption, you have contact with your child and the adoptive parents. You may visit your child and watch them grow up. It provides not only peace of mind knowing that your child is cared for, but it allows you to be an active member of their extended support network.

Option #3: Have a Closed Adoption

What do we mean by a closed adoption? In this type of arrangement, you will not have contact with your baby or their birth parents. It also ensures confidentiality: You will not know the identity of the birth parents and they will not know yours.

Some women find it emotionally easier to have a closed adoption, where they can still have peace of mind without worrying that someone will learn of their identity.

Option #4: Have a Semi-Open Adoption

If you can’t decide between an open or a closed adoption, you have another choice. A semi-open adoption in a combination of an open and closed adoption.

Under a semi-open adoption, contact between you and the adoptive parents is usually done through the adoption agency. This may or may not include in-person visits. Typically, it does include exchanging photos, letters, or emails.

Every semi-open adoption may be a little bit different, so it’s important to work with the agency to understand all the details.
