Costs and Insurance Coverage for Abortion Pills: Breaking It Down

If you’re considering the abortion pill, understanding the costs and whether insurance will cover it is important. Prices can vary depending on where you live, your healthcare coverage, and how you receive the drugs.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect when it comes to paying for the abortion pill.

How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost?

The abortion pill, which includes two medications—mifepristone and misoprostol—can cost anywhere from $300 to $800. The exact price depends on factors such as the clinic, pharmacy, or other provider you use.

The use of telemedicine to administer the abortion pill is prohibited in North Carolina. Additional costs may arise if follow-up care or an ultrasound is needed to confirm how far along you are.

Does Insurance Cover the Abortion Pill?

Insurance coverage for the abortion pill varies based on location, provider, and type of insurance.

  • Private Insurance – In North Carolina, private insurance plans may or may not cover abortion, depending on the policy and employer. Most plans do not include abortion coverage unless an additional rider is purchased.
  • State law – Prohibits insurance plans sold on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace from covering abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk.
  • Medicaid – North Carolina’s Medicaid program does not cover abortion services except in cases of rape, incest, or if the pregnancy endangers the mother’s life. If a woman does not meet these exceptions, she will likely have to pay for the abortion pill out of pocket.

North Carolina has additional regulations that impact access to abortion services, including a mandatory in-person consultation and a 72-hour waiting period before obtaining an abortion. Requirements can add travel costs and additional medical expenses.
