Ways to Help Your Partner Heal After an Abortion
If your partner has had an abortion, you may be wondering how to support her now.
Perhaps the abortion happened recently, or maybe it was years ago, and you’re only now beginning to see how deeply it affected her. You may notice that she becomes withdrawn around the anniversary of the abortion, struggles with feelings of guilt or sadness, or avoids talking about what happened altogether.
Every woman’s experience is different. Some women seem to recover quickly, while others carry emotional wounds for years. Whatever your partner’s experience has been, one thing is true: your support can make a meaningful difference in her healing.
Life Line is here to provide support for you both. Schedule a free and confidential appointment today to learn how we can help you and your partner.
Here are three ways you can come alongside her during this season.
1. Listen More Than You Try to Fix
When someone you love is hurting, it’s natural to want to make the pain go away.
However, complex emotional difficulties after an abortion usually cannot be solved with the “right” words. More often, your partner simply needs to know that she can be honest about what she’s feeling.
If she chooses to talk about her experience, try to listen without interrupting, offering quick solutions, or telling her how she should feel.
Instead, you might say:
- “Thank you for trusting me with this.”
- “I’m here to listen whenever you want to talk.”
- “I’m so sorry you’re carrying this pain.”
- “You don’t have to go through this alone.”
If she isn’t ready to talk, respect that, too. Let her know you’re available whenever she’s ready, and continue showing your support through your actions. Sometimes simply being present is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
2. Encourage Her to Take Steps Toward Healing
Healing often begins when someone realizes they don’t have to face their pain alone.
If your partner has been struggling with grief, guilt, regret, anger, or sadness after her abortion, gently encourage her to seek support from someone who understands what she’s experiencing.
That might include:
- Speaking with a trusted counselor.
- Joining a post-abortion support group.
- Meeting one-on-one with a mentor.
- Talking with a pastor or another trusted spiritual leader.
- Reading books or devotional resources written for women after abortion.
Remember, encouragement is different from pressure. Instead of insisting that she seek help, invite her to explore it. Let her know you’ll support her if and when she’s ready. Healing is often a process, and each person moves through it at their own pace.
3. Be Patient with the Healing Process
Healing after an abortion doesn’t happen overnight.
Some days, your partner may seem to be doing well. Other days, something unexpected, like a due date, a baby’s cry, a pregnancy announcement, or the anniversary of the abortion, may bring old emotions back to the surface.
This doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t making progress. Healing often comes in stages.
As her partner, one of the most valuable things you can offer is patience. Continue reminding her that she is loved, that her feelings matter, and that she doesn’t have to earn your support by “moving on” more quickly.
If you were also affected by the abortion, don’t ignore your own emotions. Men can experience grief, regret, sadness, or loss after an abortion as well. Seeking support for yourself can help you process your own experience while allowing you to better care for your partner.
